Keeping a Yorkie Cozy in New Jersey

Snow squalls rattling the windows of a Morristown townhouse rarely bother a Yorkshire Terrier curled up on a heated blanket. These pint-sized terriers carry big personalities in a very small frame, which makes them ideal for the condos, garden apartments, and townhomes that line so many Morris County commuter corridors. They bond closely with their people and ride easily in a carrier, whether the plan is a quick errand in town or a weekend with relatives down the shore. Expect a spirited little watchdog who announces every mail truck rolling down your Morristown street.

History lovers will enjoy the open meadows and quiet roads of Morristown National Historical Park, where the rolling Revolutionary War landscape makes a scenic setting for a short, leashed walk. Look over the posted pet rules at the trailhead first, and carry your Yorkie over rough gravel if paws seem tender. Wooded edges there harbor ticks from spring through fall, so a careful look through that fine, silky hair after each outing is a smart habit. You can read more about the Yorkie puppies currently waiting for homes.

North Jersey's cold months deserve the most attention. A Yorkie's single-layer coat offers little insulation against nor'easter winds, so a fleece-lined sweater is a real necessity rather than a fashion statement. Road salt on Morristown sidewalks and driveways can burn tiny pads, so rinse and dry paws when you come back inside, or try booties if your dog tolerates them. Once humid Jersey summers arrive, keep the long coat trimmed short and walk early before pavement heats up. A quick daily brush also keeps that fine hair from tangling under a harness during sticky commuter-season walks.

From Morristown side streets to high-rises in Jersey City, New Jersey puppies of every breed are waiting to meet their families on delivery day at home. Our White Glove Delivery then carries your new Yorkie, snug in its blanket, right to your family's door in New Jersey, and the 5-Year FREE Vet Package arrives with that tiny terrier.

About the Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier earned its reputation in the mills and mines of nineteenth-century northern England, where it worked as a ratter in spaces no larger dog could reach. That working past still shapes the breed. Under the silky coat is a confident, alert dog carrying far more nerve than its frame suggests. In our twenty-five years with this breed, the trait families mention most is devotion — a Yorkie picks a person and follows them room to room.

Temperament

Bold, curious, and vocal. A Yorkie announces the mail carrier, the neighbor, and the wind. They are affectionate with their own people and often reserved with strangers, so early socialization matters — a Yorkie left to its instincts can grow suspicious of new faces. They thrive as an only dog and can be possessive of their favorite person. Consistent, patient handling from the first week sets the tone for the next decade.

Size and Weight

Adults typically weigh four to seven pounds and stand seven to eight inches at the shoulder. Some lines finish smaller. Most reach their full size by ten to twelve months, and a puppy's adult weight becomes far easier to predict once you know what the parents weighed. A Yorkie under four pounds needs deliberate care around stairs, furniture, and larger dogs, and we advise families to plan for that from day one rather than after a fall.

Grooming

The Yorkie coat is hair rather than fur, which is why the breed sheds very little and suits many allergy-sensitive households. It also grows continuously and will mat without attention. Plan on brushing several times a week and a professional trim every six to eight weeks. Many owners keep a shorter puppy cut for practicality. Dental care deserves equal attention, since small mouths crowd easily.

Health

Yorkies are generally long-lived and hardy for their size. Conditions seen in the breed include patellar luxation, collapsing trachea, and dental disease. A harness rather than a collar reduces pressure on the throat and is worth adopting from the start. Every puppy we sell arrives with a health certificate and our 5-Year Free Vet Package, and we recommend setting a dental schedule with your veterinarian early rather than waiting for a problem.

Exercise and Living Space

A Yorkie needs less room than almost any breed, which makes them a strong fit for apartments and condos. Two short walks a day plus indoor play is usually enough to keep one content. What they do need is engagement — a bored Yorkie invents work for itself, and that work is usually barking. They feel the cold, and most appreciate a sweater through winter.

Lifespan

Twelve to fifteen years is typical, and with attentive dental and veterinary care many Yorkies comfortably exceed that. It is a long commitment, and one the families we work with rarely regret.
