The Aussiedoodle crosses the Australian Shepherd with the Poodle. Bright, athletic, and eye-catching, often in merle patterns, it is a favorite among active owners and one of the sharpest dogs in the doodle family. It pairs the Poodle's hypoallergenic coat with real working intelligence, and it does best with owners who can meet its considerable exercise and mental-stimulation needs.
Aussiedoodles are highly intelligent, energetic, and trainable, combining the Australian Shepherd's work ethic and drive with the Poodle's brains. They are affectionate and loyal and bond closely with their families, but they need substantial physical and mental engagement or they become bored and difficult. They can retain herding instincts and are best matched with active households.
Three sizes are recognized, driven by the Poodle parent. Toy: 10 to 12 inches, approximately 10 to 15 lbs. Mini: 12 to 18 inches, 15 to 35 lbs. Standard: 19 to 25 inches, 45 to 70 lbs.
Weight is the looser figure, since coat density and build can move the scale by several pounds.
The coat is wavy to curly and hypoallergenic, frequently merle or parti-colored. Brush several times weekly and schedule professional grooming to prevent matting around the ears, legs, and tail. Curlier coats need more frequent attention.
Aussiedoodles can inherit hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts, hypothyroidism, sebaceous adenitis, and bloat in larger dogs. One item deserves particular attention: the Australian Shepherd carries a high rate of the MDR1 gene variant, which causes sensitivity to certain common medications, including some parasite preventives and anesthetic agents, at otherwise normal doses. MDR1 status is DNA-testable, and owners should tell their veterinarian about it before any medication is prescribed. We recommend asking about MDR1 testing on the Australian Shepherd parent.
This is a high-energy cross. Standards need 60 or more minutes of vigorous daily exercise plus training or puzzle work, and even Minis and Toys are lively. Aussiedoodles excel at agility, fetch, running, and canine sports. They are not ideal for sedentary households or long hours alone, and Standards do best with room to run.
Typical lifespan is 10 to 15 years, with smaller variants trending longer. Mental stimulation, exercise, lean weight, and MDR1 awareness support a healthy life.
