About the Cavapoo

The Cavapoo, also called the Cavoodle, crosses the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the Poodle, usually a Toy or Miniature. It is one of the most popular small doodles and one of the most requested breeds we handle. Families choose it for a gentle, affectionate companion in a manageable size, with the Poodle's hypoallergenic coat. It suits families, apartment dwellers, and first-time owners looking for a smaller, people-focused dog.

Temperament

Cavapoos are gentle, affectionate, and sociable, leaning on the Cavalier's mellow, loving nature and settling into a devoted lap companion. They are playful and good with children and other pets, and they are generally easy to train. Their strong attachment to people means they are prone to separation anxiety and generally should not be left alone longer than about four hours at a stretch.

Size and Weight

Cavapoos come in three sizes driven by the Poodle parent. Toy: 9 to 12 inches, 7 to 14 lbs. Miniature: 12 to 14 inches, 10 to 18 lbs. Standard: approximately 18 inches, 20 to 30 lbs.

Overall the breed ranges from about 7 to 30 lbs. Most reach adult height by nine to eleven months and fill out by 12 to 14 months.

Grooming

The coat is silky to curly and hypoallergenic. Regular brushing several times weekly, or daily for curlier coats, plus professional grooming every six to eight weeks, prevents matting around the ears, legs, and tail. The Cavalier's floppy, furred ears need routine cleaning to prevent infection.

Health

The most important consideration is the Cavalier parent line. Mitral valve disease is the leading cause of death in Cavaliers, and Cavapoos can inherit this predisposition, which is why cardiac screening of the Cavalier parent matters. Syringomyelia and Chiari-like malformation are also documented in the Cavalier line. Other concerns include patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, and dental disease. Ear infections are common. Cardiac and eye screening of parent dogs is essential, and our Trusted Breeder Network breeders health-test before breeding.

Exercise and Living Space

Cavapoos have modest exercise needs, roughly 30 minutes of daily walking and play. They adapt very well to apartments and smaller homes and are content as companion dogs, but they still need daily engagement and company. They are not suited to households where they would be alone all day.

Lifespan

Typical lifespan is 12 to 15 years. Lean body condition, dental care, and early cardiac monitoring are the biggest levers on a long life.
