Havanese Puppies and New Jersey Shore Living
Cheerful, clownish, and always ready for company, the Havanese seems made for the social energy of Monmouth County. This sturdy little companion is small enough for a townhouse or shore bungalow yet hardy enough to keep pace with kids in a fenced backyard. It adapts well to busy commuter homes along the coast and to retired couples who split their time between the suburbs and a summer rental near the beach. Expect it to follow you from room to room, happiest wherever the family happens to gather.
A morning walk on the streets near the Asbury Park boardwalk, with the ocean breeze and the sound of gulls, is exactly the kind of outing a Havanese loves. On a clear weekend, a drive up to Sandy Hook, where the bay meets the ocean, makes for a memorable day of scenery. Seasonal beach rules for dogs vary, so check posted signs before you step onto the sand. This curious breed will want to greet every Asbury Park passerby, which is a great chance to practice polite manners. Pack a collapsible water bowl, since humid boardwalk mornings warm up fast.
That thick, silky coat is the breed's signature and its main maintenance task. Damp, salty Monmouth County air causes mats to form quickly, especially behind the ears and in the armpits, so line-brush down to the skin several times a week and rinse out sand after any seaside outing. Through winter, wipe road salt off paws and trim the hair between pads so ice doesn't clump. Families who prefer less brushing often keep a shorter cut.
