Short walks, long naps, and a spot on the couch make a French Bulldog an easy fit for commuter households that ride the Long Island Rail Road. This compact, muscular little dog has a smooth coat that is simple to care for and a calm, comical personality that suits an apartment, a starter cape, or a busy colonial with kids. Frenchies rarely bark much, which makes them a polite neighbor in close-set Nassau County towns and in apartments near a busy LIRR station.
Frenchies need modest exercise, and a couple of strolls around the block usually do the trick. Beach days at Jones Beach State Park and drives out to Montauk Point State Park are classic local traditions, yet pets often face seasonal limits at state beaches, so check the posted rules first, and remember that sun and sand are tough on this breed. A shady backyard with a kiddie pool may be the better summer plan. Car rides out east should always include air conditioning and plenty of water for your Frenchie.
Summer heat is the biggest danger for a flat-faced French Bulldog. The short muzzle makes it hard to cool down, so humid July days on Long Island call for air conditioning, short walks at dawn or dusk, and close watching for heavy panting. Hot pavement can burn paws, too. Winter brings the opposite problem, because that thin coat offers little warmth during a nor'easter, so a fitted coat helps, and a rinse after walks removes road salt from the pads. Clean the facial folds gently to keep them dry. Frenchies also do not swim well, so keep a close eye on yours near pools, docks, and the Great South Bay during boating season.
