About the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a compact, muscular companion breed with bat ears, a flat face, and an easygoing charm that has made it one of the most popular dogs in the United States. It was developed as a small companion for city dwellers and remains ideally suited to that life. Frenchies come in a wide range of coat colors, and a long-haired variant known as the Fluffy French Bulldog exists and is priced separately.

Temperament

French Bulldogs are affectionate, playful, and adaptable, with a clownish streak that makes them entertaining companions. They are generally good with children and other pets, rarely bark without reason, and are content to be close to their people. They can be stubborn during training and respond best to short, positive sessions with food rewards. Most are moderate in energy and enjoy play more than long exercise.

Size and Weight

The AKC standard calls for a weight not exceeding 28 lbs, with most Frenchies falling between 16 and 28 lbs, and a height of about 11 to 13 inches at the shoulder. The build is compact and heavy-boned for its size.

Grooming

The short, smooth coat needs only weekly brushing and sheds moderately. The important grooming task is facial fold care: the wrinkles around the nose and eyes trap moisture and debris and should be wiped clean and dried regularly to prevent skin infection. Ears need routine cleaning, and nails should be kept short since Frenchies are not naturally active enough to wear them down.

Health

French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, and prospective owners should understand what that means. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome can cause noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, and heat sensitivity, and severe cases may need corrective surgery. Frenchies overheat easily and cannot swim safely because of their body proportions. Spinal conditions including hemivertebrae and intervertebral disc disease are documented in the breed, as are patellar luxation, cherry eye, corneal ulcers, and skin fold dermatitis. Most French Bulldog litters are delivered by cesarean section because of the puppies' head size. Recommended parent testing includes patella evaluation, eye clearances, and spinal radiographs. Choosing a breeder who selects for open nostrils and a longer muzzle reduces respiratory risk.

Exercise and Living Space

French Bulldogs need modest exercise, roughly 30 minutes of daily walking and play, and should never be exercised in heat or humidity. They are excellent apartment dogs and companion animals that want to be indoors with the family. Air conditioning in summer is not optional for this breed.

Lifespan

Typical lifespan is 10 to 12 years. Lean weight, heat avoidance, and attention to breathing support the longest, healthiest life.
