About the Cockapoo
The Cockapoo crosses the Cocker Spaniel with the Poodle. It is one of the oldest intentional Poodle crosses, dating in the United States to at least the 1960s, and it remains a favorite for its merry, affectionate temperament and hypoallergenic coat. Decades before the word doodle entered common use, the Cockapoo was already proving the formula worked.
Temperament
Cockapoos are friendly, gentle, and eager to please, blending the Cocker's sweetness with the Poodle's smarts. They are typically excellent with children, patient, and highly trainable, excelling in obedience and as therapy dogs. They are people-focused and can be prone to separation anxiety if left alone too long. Most are moderately energetic and playful without being hyperactive.
Size and Weight
Cockapoos come in several sizes driven by the Poodle parent. Toy: up to about 10 inches, 6 to 12 lbs. Miniature: 11 to 14 inches, 13 to 18 lbs. Standard or Maxi: 15 inches and taller, up to about 19 to 25 lbs.
Most Cockapoos mature around 12 to 20 lbs and 10 to 15 inches.
Grooming
The coat ranges from wavy to curly and is hypoallergenic. Brush several times weekly and schedule professional grooming every six to eight weeks. The Cocker's floppy, furred ears trap moisture and are prone to infection, so routine ear cleaning is essential. Matting develops around the ears, legs, and belly without regular care.
Health
Cockapoos can inherit hip dysplasia from the Cocker side, progressive retinal atrophy and other eye conditions including glaucoma and cataracts, luxating patella, familial nephropathy, and phosphofructokinase deficiency. Ear infections are common in this cross, and itchy skin occurs more often than in either parent breed. Recommended parent testing includes progressive retinal atrophy, familial nephropathy, and phosphofructokinase DNA tests plus hip screening.
Exercise and Living Space
Cockapoos have moderate energy and need roughly 30 to 60 minutes of daily activity through walks, fetch, and play. They adapt well to apartments or houses provided they get exercise and company. They are companion dogs that should live indoors with the family.
Lifespan
Typical lifespan is 12 to 15 years, with smaller, well-bred individuals sometimes reaching further. Weight management matters, as they gain easily, along with dental care and ear hygiene.

Maxi Cockapoos can reach 25 pounds or more, while Miniature Cockapoos typically weigh between 13 and 18 pounds, and Teacup Cockapoos stay under 6 pounds. Their beautiful, soft coats come in a stunning range of colors including cream, apricot, red, chocolate, and black, often with charming markings. Most Cockapoos inherit the Poodle's low-shedding qualities, making them a wonderful option for families dealing with allergy sensitivities.
What truly sets the Cockapoo apart is their exceptional temperament. These dogs are naturally gentle with children, endlessly patient with other pets, and remarkably easy to train. They possess an almost instinctive desire to make their owners happy, which combined with their intelligence makes them responsive to positive reinforcement training from an early age. Cockapoos are adaptable to virtually any living situation, they are equally content in a city apartment or a country home with a large yard. Their moderate exercise needs and calm indoor demeanor make them perfect for families who want an active companion without the demands of a high-energy breed.
