The Shihpoo crosses the Shih Tzu with the Toy or Miniature Poodle. A small, affectionate companion, it appeals to owners wanting a gentle lap dog with a hypoallergenic coat. It suits apartments, first-time owners, and anyone seeking a smaller, lower-energy dog that is content to be close by.
Shihpoos are smart, friendly, confident, and affectionate, combining the Shih Tzu's easygoing companionability with the Poodle's intelligence. They are typically good with families and adapt well to apartment life. Moderate in energy, they enjoy both play and lap time, and they generally respond well to gentle, consistent training.
The Shihpoo is a small dog. Height runs 8 to 18 inches and weight runs 8 to 18 lbs.
Toy Poodle crosses stay very small, and adult size varies mainly with the Poodle parent.
The coat may be long and silky like the Shih Tzu, short and curly like the Poodle, or a blend, and is hypoallergenic but prone to matting. Frequent brushing and professional grooming every four to eight weeks are needed. Routine eye-wiping to manage tear staining and regular ear cleaning are important.
Shihpoos can inherit hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, eye disorders including progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts, dental and periodontal disease, and tracheal collapse. One point worth understanding before you buy: the Shih Tzu parent is a flat-faced breed, so a Shihpoo can inherit some degree of shortened muzzle, which can mean labored breathing and reduced heat and exercise tolerance. Dogs that take after the longer-muzzled Poodle side are less affected. Ask about the puppy's muzzle length if this is a concern.
Shihpoos have moderate needs, around 30 minutes of daily walking and play. They adapt very well to apartments and smaller homes. Because of possible flat-faced traits, avoid overexertion in heat and monitor breathing during activity.
Typical lifespan is 10 to 16 years. Dental care, lean body weight, and attention to breathing and heat tolerance support a healthy life.
