About the Shichon Teddy Bear
The Shichon, also called the Zuchon or Teddy Bear dog, crosses the Shih Tzu with the Bichon Frise. It earned the Teddy Bear name from its round face, button eyes, and plush coat, and it has become one of the most requested small companion crosses. It combines the Shih Tzu's calm affection with the Bichon's cheerful sociability and low-shedding coat, making it a strong fit for families, seniors, and apartment dwellers.
Temperament
Shichons are affectionate, gentle, and eager to please, with a sweet, easygoing nature that suits first-time owners. They are typically good with children and other pets and are more friendly than wary with strangers. They are people-oriented lap dogs that want to be included in daily life and can develop separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. Training is generally easy with patience and positive reinforcement.
Size and Weight
The Shichon is a small dog. Height runs 9 to 12 inches and weight runs 9 to 15 lbs.
Because both parent breeds are small and similar in size, adult size is fairly predictable within a litter.
Grooming
The coat is soft, fluffy, and low-shedding, often described as hypoallergenic, though no dog is truly allergen-free. It mats readily and needs brushing several times weekly plus professional grooming every six to eight weeks. Most owners keep the coat in a short teddy bear clip. Eyes should be wiped daily to manage tear staining and ears cleaned routinely.
Health
Shichons can inherit patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, eye conditions including cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, allergies and skin sensitivities, and dental crowding. The Shih Tzu side can contribute mild flat-faced traits, so some Shichons are heat-sensitive. Choosing a breeder who health-tests both parent dogs reduces risk.
Exercise and Living Space
Shichons have modest exercise needs, met by short daily walks and indoor play. They adapt very well to apartments and small homes and should live indoors with the family. Avoid strenuous exercise in heat.
Lifespan
Typical lifespan is 12 to 15 years. Dental care, weight management, and coat maintenance support a healthy life.
More About Shichon Teddy Bear Puppies
Why Families Love Shichon Teddy Bear Puppies
The Shichon, also lovingly known as the Teddy Bear dog, is an enchanting cross between the Shih Tzu and the Bichon Frise that has captured the hearts of families across the United States. These irresistible little dogs earn their nickname honestly, with their round faces, button eyes, and impossibly soft, fluffy coats, they truly look like living stuffed animals. But the Shichon is so much more than just a pretty face. This hybrid breed is known for its exceptionally gentle and affectionate temperament, making it one of the most sought-after companion dogs for families with children, seniors, and everyone in between. Shichons are naturally calm, patient, and deeply devoted to their families, forming strong bonds that last a lifetime.
Hypoallergenic Coats & Easy Living
One of the greatest advantages of the Shichon Teddy Bear is its hypoallergenic, low-shedding coat. Inheriting the best coat qualities from both the Shih Tzu and the Bichon Frise, these puppies produce significantly less dander than most breeds, making them an excellent choice for allergy sufferers who still dream of a cuddly canine companion. Their soft, plush coats come in a variety of beautiful colors and require regular grooming to maintain their signature teddy bear appearance. Shichons are perfectly sized for apartment living, typically weighing between 9 and 15 pounds, yet they have enough energy and playfulness to keep up with an active household. They are remarkably adaptable, thriving in both city apartments and suburban homes with equal enthusiasm.
