About the Sheepadoodle

The Sheepadoodle crosses the Old English Sheepdog with the Poodle. A larger, striking black-and-white doodle, it is valued for a gentle, affectionate temperament and a hypoallergenic coat. Because the Old English Sheepdog is a big herding breed, most Sheepadoodles are medium to large dogs best suited to families with space, though smaller variants exist.

Temperament

Sheepadoodles are affectionate, gentle, and people-oriented, often described as calm and easygoing once mature. They inherit the Sheepdog's devoted, family-guarding nature and the Poodle's intelligence, making them trainable and good with children. Many form strong attachments and can be sensitive to being left alone. Smaller variants tend to be more energetic than Standards.

Size and Weight

Three sizes are commonly offered, though naming varies by breeder. Micro or Toy: 15 to 16 inches, 25 lbs or less. Mini: 17 to 18 inches, 25 to 50 lbs. Standard: 19 to 24 inches, 50 to 85 lbs, with some exceeding 100 lbs.

Size is driven by the Poodle parent, and Standards can take two to two and a half years to reach full mature weight.

Grooming

The coat is wavy to curly, dense, and hypoallergenic but high maintenance. Brush several times weekly, or daily for curly coats, and schedule professional grooming every six to eight weeks. The thick coat mats readily and can trap heat, so coat management matters in warm weather.

Health

Sheepadoodles can inherit hip and elbow dysplasia, as both parent breeds are at risk, along with gastric dilatation-volvulus in deep-chested Standards, progressive retinal atrophy, and hypothyroidism. As with all large doodles, OFA hip and elbow clearances and eye and genetic screening of parent dogs are important.

Exercise and Living Space

Sheepadoodles are moderately active and need 45 to 60 minutes of daily exercise plus mental work, since they retain herding instincts and enjoy having a job. Standards need room and ideally a yard, while Micro and Mini dogs adapt to smaller homes. All sizes want to be with their people.

Lifespan

Typical lifespan is 12 to 15 years, with smaller variants generally living longer than Standards. Lean weight, joint support, and awareness of bloat risk in larger dogs support longevity.
