About the Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is a toy breed descended from the larger Spitz sled dogs of the Arctic, bred down in the Pomerania region of northern Europe and popularized by Queen Victoria. Its plush double coat, fox-like face, and confident, animated personality have kept it among the most popular toy breeds for over a century. It suits apartment dwellers, seniors, and owners wanting a small, lively companion with a big presence.

Temperament

Pomeranians are bold, curious, and confident, with a lively personality that belies their size. They are intelligent and trainable, alert enough to make good watchdogs, and often vocal. They bond closely with their families and can be reserved with strangers. They are playful and affectionate, though their small size and independent streak mean they suit households with older children better than very young ones.

Size and Weight

The AKC standard calls for a weight of 3 to 7 lbs and a height of 6 to 7 inches at the shoulder. The term teacup is a marketing label for dogs bred below the standard and is not recognized; the smallest dogs carry the highest health risk.

Grooming

The Pomeranian has a thick, profuse double coat with a harsh outer layer and soft undercoat. It sheds moderately year-round and heavily in spring and fall, and it needs brushing several times a week to prevent mats and control loose hair. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks keeps the coat neat. Pomeranians are not hypoallergenic. Small mouths make dental care important.

Health

Pomeranians can inherit patellar luxation, tracheal collapse, and hypothyroidism. Alopecia X, a hair loss condition also called black skin disease, occurs in the breed. Other documented predispositions include hydrocephalus, epilepsy, cataracts, and heart conditions including patent ductus arteriosus. Dental crowding and periodontal disease are common. Recommended parent testing includes patella evaluation, cardiac evaluation, and eye clearances.

Exercise and Living Space

Pomeranians have low to moderate exercise needs, met by short daily walks and indoor play. They are excellent apartment dogs and should live indoors with the family. Their thick coat makes them heat-sensitive, so exercise should be limited in warm weather. Because of their small size they should be handled gently and supervised around young children and larger dogs.

Lifespan

Typical lifespan is 12 to 16 years. Dental care, weight control, and gentle handling support a long life.
