About the Pembroke Welsh Corgi
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a low-set, sturdy herding breed from Wales, developed to drive cattle by nipping at their heels and ducking under kicks. Its fox-like face, big ears, and short legs have made it one of the most recognizable and beloved breeds in the world. It suits active families who want a medium-sized dog with a big personality and are prepared for heavy shedding.
Temperament
Corgis are bold, outgoing, and clever, with a strong work ethic and a tendency to think for themselves. They are affectionate with their families and typically good with children, though their herding instinct can lead to nipping at heels if not trained early. They are alert watchdogs and can be vocal. They are highly trainable and excel at obedience, agility, and herding trials.
Size and Weight
The AKC standard calls for a height of 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder and a weight of up to 30 lbs for males and up to 28 lbs for females. The body is long and low with a natural bobtail or docked tail, distinguishing it from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, which has a full tail.
Grooming
The Corgi has a thick, weather-resistant double coat that sheds heavily year-round and profusely in spring and fall. Brushing several times a week is needed to control loose hair. Corgis are not hypoallergenic. Nails should be trimmed regularly and ears cleaned routinely.
Health
Pembroke Welsh Corgis can inherit hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, progressive retinal atrophy, von Willebrand's disease, and epilepsy. Their long back makes them prone to intervertebral disc disease, so lean weight and avoiding jumping from heights matter. They gain weight easily. Recommended parent testing includes hip clearances, eye clearances, and DNA screening for degenerative myelopathy, PRA, and von Willebrand's.
Exercise and Living Space
Corgis are active dogs that need 45 to 60 minutes of daily exercise and mental engagement. They adapt to apartments if well exercised but do best with a yard. Stairs and jumping should be managed to protect the back. They should live indoors with the family.
Lifespan
Typical lifespan is 12 to 13 years. Weight control and back protection are the most important habits for a long, mobile life.
More About Pembroke Welsh Corgi Puppies
Beloved by Royalty, Adored by Families
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is one of the most recognizable and beloved dog breeds in the world, made famous by Queen Elizabeth II, who owned more than 30 Corgis during her lifetime. These charming, short-legged herding dogs combine a big personality with a compact, sturdy build that makes them equally suited for country estates and city apartments. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are known for their foxy faces, large pointed ears, and adorable fluffy backsides that have made them viral social media sensations. Beyond their irresistible looks, Corgis are highly intelligent, surprisingly athletic, and deeply loyal dogs who form strong bonds with every member of their family.
Big Personality, Short Legs, Endless Joy
Do not let their short legs fool you, Pembroke Welsh Corgis are surprisingly fast, agile, and energetic dogs who love to run, play, and participate in family activities. Their herding instinct makes them alert and responsive, and their intelligence means they excel in obedience and agility training. Corgis are social butterflies who generally get along well with other dogs, cats, and children, making them excellent family pets. They come in beautiful colors including red, sable, fawn, and tri-color, often with the distinctive white markings that give them their classic Corgi look. Their weather-resistant double coat sheds seasonally but is relatively easy to maintain with regular brushing.
