About the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever has been America's most popular family dog for the better part of three decades, and for good reason. Developed in Newfoundland as a fisherman's working dog and refined in England as a gun dog, the Lab is friendly, athletic, and eager to work alongside people. It comes in three recognized colors, black, yellow, and chocolate, and its steady temperament makes it a favorite for families, service work, and sport.

Temperament

Labs are outgoing, even-tempered, and famously good with children and other animals. They are eager to please and highly trainable, which is why they dominate guide dog and therapy dog programs. Puppies and young adults are exuberant and mouthy and need consistent training and plenty of exercise to channel that energy. Most Labs remain playful well into adulthood and are happiest when included in family activities.

Size and Weight

The AKC standard calls for males 22.5 to 24.5 inches at the shoulder and 65 to 80 lbs, and females 21.5 to 23.5 inches and 55 to 70 lbs. English-type Labs tend to be stockier and calmer; American or field-type Labs are leaner and more driven. Labels like silver, charcoal, or fox red describe coat shades within the three standard colors and are not separate breeds.

Grooming

The Lab's short, dense double coat is water-resistant and sheds heavily, especially in spring and fall. Weekly brushing controls loose hair, increasing to several times a week during shedding season. Labs are not hypoallergenic. Their hanging ears need routine cleaning, particularly for dogs that swim, and nails should be trimmed regularly.

Health

Labs can inherit hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, exercise-induced collapse, centronuclear myopathy, and tricuspid valve dysplasia. They are also prone to obesity, which worsens joint problems, and to ear infections. Recommended parent testing includes OFA hip and elbow clearances, eye clearances, and DNA screening for exercise-induced collapse, PRA, and centronuclear myopathy. Keeping a Lab lean is the single most effective thing an owner can do for its long-term joint health.

Exercise and Living Space

Labs are active dogs that need at least an hour of vigorous daily exercise, ideally including retrieving, swimming, or running. They adapt to many living situations but do best with a yard and an active family. An under-exercised Lab is a destructive Lab. They are indoor companion dogs and should not be left outside alone.

Lifespan

Typical lifespan is 11 to 13 years. Lean weight, joint care, and regular exercise support longevity.
