The Havapoo, also called the Poovanese or Havadoodle, crosses the Havanese with the Toy or Miniature Poodle. A small, cheerful companion, it is valued for an affectionate, sociable personality and a hypoallergenic coat. It is a strong fit for families, apartment dwellers, and first-time owners, and it is one of the easiest small crosses to live with.
Havapoos are affectionate, playful, sociable, and intelligent, combining the Havanese's people-loving nature with the Poodle's trainability. They thrive on companionship, are good with children and other pets, and are generally easy to train. Their attachment to people means they prefer not to be left alone for long periods.
The Havapoo is a small dog. Height runs 8 to 15 inches and weight runs 7 to 20 lbs, occasionally up to 30 lbs in Miniature Poodle crosses.
Toy Poodle crosses stay under about 10 lbs, and Miniature Poodle crosses reach the upper end.
The coat ranges from curly like the Poodle to wavy or silky like the Havanese, and is hypoallergenic. Regular brushing prevents matting, and professional grooming or clipping every six to eight weeks keeps the coat manageable. Ears need routine cleaning.
Havapoos can inherit progressive retinal atrophy, which can lead to blindness, along with periodontal disease, patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and cataracts. The Havanese line can contribute some heart and liver concerns. As a small, long-lived cross the Havapoo is generally robust, but choosing a breeder who screens both parent dogs reduces risk.
Havapoos have modest exercise needs, roughly 30 to 60 minutes of daily walks and play. They adapt very well to apartments and smaller homes and are content as companion dogs. They should have daily company and engagement rather than long hours alone.
Typical lifespan is 12 to 15 years. Dental care, weight management, and routine eye monitoring support a full life.
