About the Dachshund
The Dachshund was developed in Germany to trail and flush badgers, and its long, low body and fearless nature are a direct result of that job. It comes in two sizes and three coat types, which gives families a wide range of looks within one breed. Bold, curious, and deeply attached to its people, the Dachshund is one of the most recognizable dogs in the world and a consistent favorite with families who want a small dog with a big personality.
Temperament
Dachshunds are clever, spirited, and stubborn in roughly equal measure. They bond intensely with their families and can be wary of strangers, which makes them alert little watchdogs. Their hound heritage means they follow their nose and can be independent-minded during training, so patience and consistency pay off. Most are playful and affectionate, and many enjoy burrowing under blankets, a habit that traces back to their tunneling origins.
Size and Weight
The AKC recognizes two sizes. Standard: 16 to 32 lbs, about 8 to 9 inches at the shoulder. Miniature: 11 lbs and under, about 5 to 6 inches at the shoulder. Dogs between 11 and 16 lbs are sometimes called tweenies, though that is not an official designation. All three coat types, smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired, come in both sizes.
Grooming
Grooming depends on the coat. Smooth coats need only occasional brushing and shed moderately. Wirehaired coats benefit from hand-stripping a few times a year and regular brushing of the beard and eyebrows. Longhaired coats need brushing several times weekly to prevent tangles, especially behind the ears and on the legs. All varieties need routine nail trimming and ear cleaning, since the long, hanging ears can trap moisture.
Health
The most important health consideration is intervertebral disc disease, which affects the Dachshund's long spine at a higher rate than most breeds. Keeping the dog at a lean weight, discouraging jumping on and off furniture, and using ramps or steps materially reduce risk. Other documented predispositions include progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, epilepsy, and in some lines cardiac and thyroid conditions. Dapple-to-dapple breeding can produce double-merle puppies with vision and hearing defects, so it is worth asking how the parents were paired. Recommended parent testing includes eye clearances and PRA DNA screening.
Exercise and Living Space
Dachshunds are more energetic than their size suggests and do well with two moderate walks a day plus play. They adapt to apartments and houses alike, but stairs and high furniture should be managed carefully to protect the back. Because of their prey drive, a secure yard or leash is important; they will follow a scent without hesitation.
Lifespan
Typical lifespan is 12 to 16 years, with Miniatures often reaching the upper end. Weight control and back protection are the two habits that most reliably support a long, mobile life.

The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog" or "sausage dog," is one of the most recognizable and beloved breeds in the world. Originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers, Dachshunds possess a bold, tenacious spirit that belies their small stature. They come in two sizes, standard and miniature, and three distinct coat types: smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired, each with its own unique charm and personality.
Dachshunds are famously stubborn but irresistibly lovable. Their independent streak is balanced by a deep loyalty to their families. They form incredibly strong bonds with their owners and are known to follow their favorite person from room to room. With one of the keenest noses in the canine world, second only to the Bloodhound, Dachshunds are natural trackers and love exploring the outdoors. Their curious nature and playful antics make them endlessly entertaining companions for individuals, couples, and families alike.
Whether you prefer the sleek elegance of a smooth coat, the flowing beauty of a longhaired, or the rugged character of a wirehaired Dachshund, this breed offers something for everyone. They come in a stunning array of colors and patterns, including red, black and tan, chocolate, cream, dapple, piebald, and brindle. Despite their short legs and long bodies, Dachshunds are surprisingly athletic and energetic, always ready for a walk, a game, or a good dig in the yard.
