About the Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world, named for the Mexican state where it was first documented. It comes in smooth and long coat varieties and a wide range of colors, and it packs an outsized personality into a body that fits in a handbag. It suits apartment dwellers, seniors, and owners wanting a portable, loyal companion, with the understanding that a dog this small calls for gentle handling and supervision.
Temperament
Chihuahuas are alert, confident, and fiercely loyal, often bonding intensely with one person. They can be wary of strangers and other dogs and make surprisingly effective watchdogs, though they can be vocal. They are intelligent and trainable with patience and positive reinforcement. Early socialization matters more for this breed than most, since an undersocialized Chihuahua can become snappy or fearful.
Size and Weight
The AKC standard calls for a weight not exceeding 6 lbs, with no height requirement, though most stand 5 to 8 inches at the shoulder. The term teacup is a marketing label for dogs bred at the very low end and is not a recognized size; the smallest dogs carry the highest health risk.
Grooming
Smooth-coat Chihuahuas need only occasional brushing. Long-coat Chihuahuas need brushing several times a week to prevent tangles in the ear fringe, tail, and leg feathering. Both varieties shed moderately and are not hypoallergenic. Small mouths make dental care critical, and nails should be trimmed regularly.
Health
Chihuahuas can inherit patellar luxation, tracheal collapse, mitral valve disease and other heart conditions, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, and progressive retinal atrophy. Dental crowding and periodontal disease are common because of the tiny jaw. Very small puppies are prone to hypoglycemia. Many Chihuahuas retain a soft spot on the skull, called a molera, into adulthood, which is normal for the breed but calls for care against head injury. Recommended parent testing includes patella evaluation, cardiac evaluation, and eye clearances.
Exercise and Living Space
Chihuahuas need only short daily walks and indoor play. They are ideal apartment dogs and should live indoors with the family. They are cold-sensitive and often need a sweater in winter. Because of their fragility they should be handled gently and supervised around young children and larger dogs.
Lifespan
Typical lifespan is 14 to 16 years, among the longest of any breed. Dental care, weight control, and protection from injury support a full life.

Tiny Chihuahua Puppies from a Licensed Puppy Specialist. Perfect Apartment Dogs
Best Puppies is a licensed puppy specialist with over 25 years of experience, and we are thrilled to offer Chihuahua puppies from carefully selected, reputable breeders. The Chihuahua holds the distinction of being the smallest recognized dog breed in the world, yet what these tiny dogs lack in size they more than make up for in personality, courage, and devotion. Weighing between two and six pounds, Chihuahuas are bold, confident, and full of character. They are fiercely loyal, often forming an exceptionally strong bond with one special person, making them the ultimate devoted companion.
Chihuahuas come in two beautiful coat varieties: the smooth coat (short-haired) and the long coat, each with its own distinct appeal. They are available in nearly every color and pattern imaginable, including fawn, black, white, chocolate, cream, gold, red, blue, and merle. Their expressive eyes, oversized ears, and sassy attitude give them an unmistakable presence that dog lovers find absolutely irresistible. Despite their diminutive size, Chihuahuas are alert and spirited, making them surprisingly effective little watchdogs.
One of the Chihuahua’s greatest advantages is its perfect suitability for apartment and small-space living. They require minimal exercise compared to larger breeds, yet they love playtime, short walks, and curling up on a warm lap. Chihuahuas are intelligent and can be trained with patience and positive reinforcement. They tend to be long-lived, with many Chihuahuas enjoying healthy lives well into their teens. Their portable size means they can travel with you almost anywhere, making them ideal companions for those with active lifestyles who want a dog by their side.
