About the Whoodle

The Whoodle crosses the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier with the Poodle. Also called the Wheatendoodle, it is a friendly, energetic dog with a hypoallergenic coat that ranges from small to medium depending on the Poodle parent. It suits active owners ready for a real grooming commitment, and it is one of the more distinctive crosses in the doodle family.

Temperament

Whoodles are playful, friendly, and active, combining the Wheaten Terrier's exuberant, people-loving nature with the Poodle's intelligence. They are affectionate and sociable and make good family dogs with proper socialization, but they can be headstrong and benefit from consistent, positive training. They are lively dogs that enjoy being on the go.

Size and Weight

Size is driven by the Poodle parent. Toy or small: 10 to 14 inches, 10 to 20 lbs. Mini: 14 to 17 inches, 20 to 40 lbs. Standard: 18 to 20 inches, 40 to 70 lbs.

Most Whoodles fall in the small to medium range of roughly 20 to 45 lbs.

Grooming

The coat is silky and wavy to curly, hypoallergenic, and grows quickly, so it is prone to matting. Frequent brushing, several times weekly to daily, plus professional grooming every six to eight weeks are needed. Mat-prone zones include the ears, legs, and tail.

Health

Whoodles can inherit conditions from both parent breeds. The Wheaten side contributes risk of protein-losing nephropathy and protein-losing enteropathy, Addison's disease, and renal dysplasia, while the Poodle side contributes hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, Addison's disease, and sebaceous adenitis. Unexplained weight loss or swelling warrants prompt veterinary attention given the protein-losing risk. Look for genetic testing plus hip and eye clearances on the parent dogs.

Exercise and Living Space

Whoodles are energetic and need 60 to 90 minutes of daily exercise plus mental engagement. They enjoy walks, running, fetch, and play, and they do best with active owners and ideally room to move. Larger Whoodles are not well suited to sedentary apartment life without ample daily activity.

Lifespan

Typical lifespan is 12 to 15 years, with smaller variants generally living longer. Exercise, lean weight, and monitoring for the Wheaten line's protein-losing conditions support longevity.
