The Shichon, also called the Zuchon or Teddy Bear dog, crosses the Shih Tzu with the Bichon Frise. It earned the Teddy Bear name from its round face, button eyes, and plush coat, and it has become one of the most requested small companion crosses. It combines the Shih Tzu's calm affection with the Bichon's cheerful sociability and low-shedding coat, making it a strong fit for families, seniors, and apartment dwellers.
Shichons are affectionate, gentle, and eager to please, with a sweet, easygoing nature that suits first-time owners. They are typically good with children and other pets and are more friendly than wary with strangers. They are people-oriented lap dogs that want to be included in daily life and can develop separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. Training is generally easy with patience and positive reinforcement.
The Shichon is a small dog. Height runs 9 to 12 inches and weight runs 9 to 15 lbs.
Because both parent breeds are small and similar in size, adult size is fairly predictable within a litter.
The coat is soft, fluffy, and low-shedding, often described as hypoallergenic, though no dog is truly allergen-free. It mats readily and needs brushing several times weekly plus professional grooming every six to eight weeks. Most owners keep the coat in a short teddy bear clip. Eyes should be wiped daily to manage tear staining and ears cleaned routinely.
Shichons can inherit patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, eye conditions including cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, allergies and skin sensitivities, and dental crowding. The Shih Tzu side can contribute mild flat-faced traits, so some Shichons are heat-sensitive. Choosing a breeder who health-tests both parent dogs reduces risk.
Shichons have modest exercise needs, met by short daily walks and indoor play. They adapt very well to apartments and small homes and should live indoors with the family. Avoid strenuous exercise in heat.
Typical lifespan is 12 to 15 years. Dental care, weight management, and coat maintenance support a healthy life.
