About the Schnoodle

The Schnoodle crosses the Schnauzer with the Poodle. Depending on the parent dogs' sizes, it ranges from a tiny lap dog to a sturdy standard-sized companion. Loyal, clever, and lively, the Schnoodle is valued as an affectionate family dog and an alert watchdog, and both parent breeds contribute hypoallergenic coats, which makes this one of the most reliably low-shedding crosses available.

Temperament

Schnoodles are intelligent, playful, affectionate, and loyal, combining the Schnauzer's alert, sometimes protective nature with the Poodle's trainability. They make good watchdogs and companions, are typically friendly and social, and can show a stubborn streak from the Schnauzer side. They bond strongly with their families and enjoy being active participants in daily life.

Size and Weight

Size varies widely with the parent dogs. Toy or Mini: approximately 9 to 15 lbs. Standard: approximately 25 to 60 lbs. Giant: 55 to 85 lbs, from a Giant Schnauzer and Standard Poodle cross.

Confirm the parent dogs' sizes to predict a puppy's adult size, since the range here is wider than in most crosses.

Grooming

The coat may be soft and curly like the Poodle, wiry like the Schnauzer, or a blend, and is hypoallergenic in all three cases. Brush regularly and schedule professional grooming roughly every two to three months. Schnauzer-type coats and hairy ear canals mean ear hair may need plucking to prevent infection.

Health

Schnoodles can inherit patellar luxation and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts, and from the Schnauzer side diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and pancreatitis. Other documented risks include hip dysplasia, Addison's disease, von Willebrand's disease, bladder and urinary stones, and epilepsy. Hairy ears predispose to ear infections. Health testing of parent dogs lowers these risks.

Exercise and Living Space

Exercise needs scale with size. Smaller Schnoodles are content with short walks and play, while Standard and Giant dogs need 45 to 60 minutes of daily activity. They are adaptable to apartments in the smaller sizes or houses in the larger ones, and they enjoy walks, fetch, and hiking. All sizes want companionship and mental engagement.

Lifespan

Typical lifespan is 10 to 15 years, with smaller Schnoodles generally living longer. Weight management and monitoring for diabetes and pancreatitis support longevity.
