The Maltipoo crosses the Maltese with the Toy or Miniature Poodle. It is one of the most popular small companion crosses, valued for a cheerful, affectionate personality and a small, portable size with a hypoallergenic coat. Families, apartment dwellers, and seniors seeking a devoted lap dog gravitate toward this cross, and in 25 years it has been one of the steadiest sellers we handle.
Maltipoos are affectionate, playful, and highly people-oriented, classic lap dogs that also carry the Poodle's intelligence. They bond closely with their owners, are generally friendly with other dogs and pets when socialized, and are responsive to positive-reinforcement training. They can be vocal and are prone to separation anxiety, so they do best with company for much of the day.
The Maltipoo is a single small size class that varies with the Poodle parent. Height runs 7 to 14 inches at the shoulder, and weight runs 5 to 20 lbs, with most around 8 to 12 lbs.
Toy Poodle crosses stay smaller, and Miniature Poodle crosses reach the upper end. Because both parent breeds are small, adult size is fairly predictable within a litter.
The coat is wavy to curly and hypoallergenic, often white or cream, though many colors occur. It mats easily and needs frequent brushing plus professional grooming every four to eight weeks. Small mouths make dental care especially important, and light-colored faces are prone to tear staining that needs gentle daily cleaning.
Maltipoos are generally long-lived but carry small-breed risks. Patellar luxation is among the most common. Others include dental and periodontal disease, progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, portosystemic liver shunt, and white shaker syndrome, a tremor disorder seen in small white dogs that is treatable but requires lifelong management. Choosing a breeder who health-tests both parent dogs lowers these risks.
Exercise needs are modest. Ten to 30 minutes of daily play and short walks keep a Maltipoo fit. They are ideal apartment and small-home dogs. Because they are small and delicate, interactions with very young children should be supervised to prevent accidental injury.
Typical lifespan is 12 to 16 years, among the longer-lived crosses. Weight control, dental care, and routine veterinary checks support a full life.
