About the Poochon

The Poochon, also called the Bichpoo, crosses the Bichon Frise with the Toy or Miniature Poodle. A small, cheerful companion with a hypoallergenic coat from both sides of the cross, it is prized for a gentle, affectionate temperament. It suits families, apartment dwellers, and first-time owners, and it is one of the more reliably low-shedding small dogs we handle.

Temperament

Poochons are gentle, affectionate, cheerful, and intelligent, blending the Bichon's sunny sociability with the Poodle's trainability. They are loyal, playful, and eager to please, which makes them easy to train. They bond closely with their families and can bark or develop separation anxiety if under-socialized or left alone too long.

Size and Weight

The Poochon is a small dog. Height runs 9 to 15 inches and weight runs 6 to 18 lbs.

Because both parent breeds are small, adult size is fairly predictable within a litter and varies mainly with the Poodle parent.

Grooming

The coat is curly and hypoallergenic, closer to hair than fur, with low dander. It mats readily and needs regular brushing plus periodic trimming or professional grooming to stay comfortable. Faces may need gentle cleaning to manage tear staining, and ears need routine care.

Health

Poochons can inherit patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, allergies and skin problems, and Addison's disease. Other documented risks in the Bichon and Poodle lines include dental disease, ear infections, sebaceous adenitis, epilepsy, and in older dogs degenerative mitral valve disease. Choosing a breeder who health-tests both parent dogs lowers these risks.

Exercise and Living Space

Poochons have modest exercise needs. Short daily walks and play keep them fit, which makes them well suited to apartments and smaller homes. They are companion dogs that want to be with their people and should not be left alone for long stretches.

Lifespan

Typical lifespan is 12 to 16 years, among the longer-lived crosses. Dental care, weight management, and routine veterinary checks support a long, healthy life.
