About the Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, tricolored working breed from the Swiss farmlands, originally used to pull carts and drive cattle. Its striking black, rust, and white coat and gentle, affectionate nature have made it a beloved family dog. It is a strong choice for families with space who want a calm, devoted large-breed companion and are prepared for a shorter lifespan than smaller dogs.

Temperament

Berners are gentle, patient, and deeply attached to their families. They are typically excellent with children and tolerant of other pets, and they are more reserved than aggressive with strangers. They mature slowly and can be goofy and clumsy well into their second or third year. They are sensitive dogs that respond poorly to harsh training and thrive on positive reinforcement and inclusion in family life.

Size and Weight

The AKC standard calls for males 25 to 27.5 inches at the shoulder and 80 to 115 lbs, and females 23 to 26 inches and 70 to 95 lbs. They are heavy-boned and reach full size slowly, often not filling out until age two or three.

Grooming

The Berner has a long, thick double coat that sheds heavily year-round and profusely in spring and fall. Brushing several times a week is needed to control shedding and prevent mats behind the ears and on the legs. They are not hypoallergenic. Their coat makes them heat-sensitive, so exercise should be limited in warm weather.

Health

Bernese Mountain Dogs carry a higher-than-average risk of several cancers, including histiocytic sarcoma, which is the most significant health concern in the breed. Other documented predispositions include hip and elbow dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus, progressive retinal atrophy, von Willebrand's disease, and degenerative myelopathy. Recommended parent testing includes OFA hip and elbow clearances, cardiac evaluation, eye clearances, and DNA screening for von Willebrand's and degenerative myelopathy. Ask about longevity in the parents' lines; it varies meaningfully between breeders.

Exercise and Living Space

Berners need moderate daily exercise, roughly 30 to 60 minutes of walking and play, but not strenuous running, especially while growing. They do best in a house with a yard and are not well suited to apartments. They are cold-weather dogs that need shade and air conditioning in summer. They want to be with their family and should live indoors.

Lifespan

Typical lifespan is 7 to 10 years, shorter than most breeds because of the cancer predisposition. Lean weight, careful joint care during growth, and choosing lines with documented longevity give the best chance of a longer life.
